The reserve is at its loudest right now — joe-pye weed, ironweed, goldenrod just starting. We walk slowly, name a few, and let everyone pick one flower to press at home.

Bring: Water, a paper bag, a hand lens if you have one

Milkweed pods are swelling and the last monarch generation is fueling up for Mexico. We check leaf undersides for eggs and caterpillars, and talk about what a two-thousand-mile trip asks of an insect.

Bring: Long pants, water, a notebook

Shallow water, slow current, and a whole streambed of sorting material. Kids lay out stones by color and texture while we look for crayfish and caddisfly cases underneath.

Bring: Water shoes, towel, dry socks

Everything is packing itself into a container right now. We hunt for pods that fly, stick, split, and rattle, then compare travel strategies on a picnic table.

Bring: An egg carton or small box for sorting

Peak color on the peninsula trail. The goal is a full spectrum — one leaf for every shade a child can find — and a short lesson in pressing them so they keep.

Bring: A flat folder or old book for carrying leaves

Old growth, damp ground, and the best decomposition classroom in the region. We turn over logs, find shelf fungi and slime molds, and put everything back where we found it.

Bring: A magnifier and a camera or phone

The leaves are down and birds are finally easy to see. We find a spot, stay still for twenty minutes at a stretch, and keep a shared tally of who shows up.

Bring: A blanket to sit on, binoculars if you have them

Without leaves, every tree gives away its shape. We sketch three silhouettes, feel the difference between beech and oak bark, and learn to spot next spring's buds already waiting.

Bring: Warm layers, a pencil, paper on something stiff

The darkest week of the year, walked on purpose. A short loop by lantern light, a pause to listen for owls, and a quiet minute with everything switched off.

Bring: A lantern or headlamp, warm boots

Fresh snow is a record of everything that moved last night. We measure prints, follow one trail as far as it goes, and guess out loud about what happened.

Bring: Snow boots, a ruler, gloves that let you hold a pencil

A short walk and a long look. We collect a few twigs, bring them inside, and put them under a lens to see how tightly a whole spring is folded up.

Spring beauty, trout lily, and toothwort come and go before the canopy closes. We visit early, count what is open, and mark the date so we can compare next year.

Spring peepers get loud enough to feel. We stand at the edge of a woodland pool after dark, sort three calls by ear, and look for egg masses without stepping in.

Bring: Flashlight, boots, an extra layer

Dying elms, tulip poplars, and south-facing slopes. We practice looking at the ground the way a hunter does, and talk honestly about the rules of eating wild things.

Bring: A mesh bag, long pants for ticks

We set up bowls, spoons, and a water bucket by the creek and let the morning go where it goes. Adults sit down. Children make soup out of the world.
