The same leaf is different every time.

Three-year-olds are not too young to observe. They are often better at it.

The belief

Children ages three to five are too young to look carefully.

What we say instead

Young children can observe, explore, and discover in ordinary settings.

We collected six leaves off the same maple. To me they were six maple leaves. My daughter sorted them in under a minute: the crispy one, the one with a bite out of it, the two that are almost twins, the small pale one, and the one she liked best, which had no distinguishing feature I could find.

Position statements on early science education credit young children with exactly this capacity to observe, explore, and discover, in formal settings and in the driveway. What they add, and I think this matters, is that the growth comes from repeated exploration over time, not from one impressive session.

So we go back. Same tree, different week. The comparison is where the language shows up: bigger, browner, softer than last time, this one is dead but this one is only tired.

The skill being practiced is not identification. It is holding two things side by side and saying what is different. That is a small piece of scientific thinking and a three-year-old can do it while barefoot.

Try this week

  • Collect six of the same thing and ask the child to put them in order.
  • Do not suggest the sorting rule. Ask what the rule was afterward.
  • Return to the same tree next week and compare.
